W202 1999 a bad year?
 

I was talking to another 1999 C280 owner and he was saying that 1999 is not one of the better years for the C280. He feels a BMW might be a better way to go. I personally dont totaly agree but my car has had quite a few issues going on. what you think?

Hey benzofanatic2004,

My research showed just the opposite! One of the first things I remember reading, researching the '99 C-Class, it may have been the best build for Mercedes from '95-2005! I also recall that in 1999 the C280 was voted the best built car in Germany for that year. (That doesn't mean it was the most reliable in Germany. That award went to Lexus or Accura, as it does in this country.) Futhermore, I've talked with local Mercedes-Benz service managers and no matter which service manager I speak with they all say the same thing: the late model W202 is a very reliable car which they rarely see for major repairs.
Then there is my mechanic, an old timer from Germany who has (and does) work almost exclusively on Mercedes. He agrees the later W202 C-Class' are well built.
BTW, if you don't have a prefered mechanic, I recommend, with out hesitation, Ernie Schmitt of AUTOMEISTER II (425/ 392-3012). He is very knowledgeable and fair. Prices are significantly below the dealships.

I have a 2000 C280 Sport with 75k on it. It has been nothing but trouble since day one. It started with just a $400 repair thinking ohwell its a used car stuff happines. Then before you know it I have had that car in the shop more then my 1987 420sel and 02 e320 combined. Many people say that the W202 is a well built car and it is untill you get inside and find an all plastic interior. I have had most issues with the interior(Headliner,seats,dash) Its all plastic that sqeaks and rattles.
