Should I buy my wrecked C280 salvage?
I was wondering if I should buy my 2000 C280 which got totaled this week. It has moderate to heavy front end damage. Rest of the car and the interior is in very good condition. My guess is that it will cost me $750 to $1000 to buy the salvage from my insurance company if I opt to do that. Wonder if there is much demand for parts and if I could make some money parting out the car? Any thoughts?

Who is in control of this situation? You or the insurance company? Under what rediculous circumstances would you have to buy your own car back from the insurance company?Do they have complete control over your property? You must live in the US.

In the US once the insurance company deems the vehicle salvaged they take control and if the owner still wants it they have to buy it back from the insurance company. They figure if they pay you out on the policy you can't have the car and a check so basically they bought it now they own it. They will just sell it for parts to a wholesaler.
In my view, it depends on a lot of things.
You would need to have a lot of time on your hands to deal with it.
You would probably still need to carry insurance on it even though it doesn't work, at least that is the case in VA. Probably best to let the insurance co take it, unless you have some good aftermarket upgrades in it, in that case keep it, strip the upgrades, sell it to a scrap yard.

I was trying to replace my 2000 C280 Sport with an identical car but there are so few for sale and I have not been able to find one in the same condition of mine, which was excellent. If I can't find a replacement soon I'll give up with the idea of buying the salvage to harvest the AMG rims and some high value spare parts. : (
