2005 C230.
For a few weeks I would have occasional problem with the trunk opening. I would get the ratcheting sound when I pulled the trunk latch and it wouldn't open. Eventually it would open but then it got so bad it was a gamble if it would or not. A few days ago I got it open and went to shut it and it wouldn't shut-the rear latch mechanism wouldn't work. I took it all apart and found a small broken gear piece inside. So I believe that is the culprit, but just wanted to know if there was any chance the upper lock/handle mechanism could be faulty as well? (I figure fix everything while I have the trunk cover off.
