Default Hi from Ausralia...faulty c180 fuel sender question

Hi all...help please?....My 1997 c180 , vin WDB2020 182F 644 850, has a faulty fuel sender unit. (reads not empty when it is empty etc) . I got a quote for $800AUD (australia). The auto electrician said he'd heard from Merc dealers , that this was a common problem, due to the connections being "gold"?(I may have got that wrong) and reacting badly to our fuel in Australia.

Do you know anything about this? Thanks, Rossl

Thanks Sleepwalker...Can I ask you opinion on 2 questions:
1. How long do you think a fuel sending unit should last in a merc? should I expect the fuel sending unit to last longer than 7 years?;and
2. would certain types of feul react badly to gold plating on the unit?...i ask this as I heard that merc benz was replacing units here in Australia with different types of units.
Thanks.

the gold contacts are the modified version already.

most of them doesn't complain about this problem after the replacement.

very rarely that the new parts gets faulty again after a few days. it depends on how careful the mechanic do during installation.

yes, this is a wide common problem on your model.

Try www.mercedesshop.com for oem parts, there prices are good, but I don't know if they ship international. I've have purchased a few parts from this site and most were 30% to 50% off retail. On the main page click on Fast Lane.
