Merc c200 BAS/ASR light on problem

Hi,

I havea mercedes c200 Auto estate 1998. Recently the BAS/ASR light has been coming on. Does anyone know what I can check and how I can fix it myself.
The car is overdue for a service by 500 miles, can this cause the problem.

Any help would be welcome, a beginners guide preferably with pics if possible.

I really don't want to pay a garage as the prices in the Uk are very high for repairs!

Thanks.:(

go under the driver's footwell panel and remove the cover from the top of pedals.

you will see a switch on top of brake pedal.

pull out those two wiring connectors.

press the locking lever on the side of the switch and twist the swicth out counter clockwise....about 1/4 turn.

hold that push rod and pull it all the way up.

install it back.

the two output from the switch:

one is normally open and the other one is normally close.

it means that if you actuate the switch, it will reverse the signal.

check the continuity. if faulty, replace.

it's simply on and off and no resistance at all. must be less than 1 ohm or else infinite.

Hi
I finally managed to get a chance to look at what you suggested. But when I remove the cover off the footwell I don't see/have any connectors. Do I need to check the brake pads for loose wires, the fault seems intermittant. Do you know what esle I can check.

Cheers.

the brake pad cannot activate the BAS/ASR malfunction indicator lamp.

....did you see the brake switch somewhere on the area of the brake pedal link? behind that brake switch there is a connector for electricals (4 wires).

anyway, just pull out that brake switch....with connector or no connector and reset it. i have haven't seen a switch which was directly wired before.

Hello, I just want to warn people with MB and having to replace that brake switch.

I have a 1995 SL 500 and the wires going to the brake switch has two pairs of wires going to the switch, The top pair sends 12 volts to the ea, cc and isc modules, Well the wire caught fire and almost cost me a wiring harness. Something caused the short in the wires and bothabs/ars lights came on.After I pulled the wires apart the lights went off, the brake lightswork and all seems fine except for the burned wires.

After reading this forum and several other I have been looking at. It seems that MB has been replacing alot of switches and wiring harness and charging big bucks.

I also own a 1995 for truck, and last year I got a recall notice, that says that the cruise control (CC) can cause an under the hood fire.

Seems to me that MB should have a recall also.

I was told by MB USA when I wrote them about the problem, to take it to a dealer and they would work with me. Well I callled them and guess what, They want big bucks to replace the switch and any wires that might have burned, nothing about helping me trouble shoot the cause of the FIRE in the first place and no safety recall as of yet.
