I bought a used "key" for my 99 C 280. I took it to the dealer where I bought the car and they said they couldn't activate it. All of these electronic keys are activated by MBUSA in NJ. I call down to NJ and was told the policy is not to accept used keys and you can only get a new key activated, I was also told your old keys can be activated once they are broken and you also have to buy a new key/ So I sent $140 for a new key. One reason they gave me was the car the the used keys come would have to be traced and see if it was a wreck. stolen etc. Over the years I have found Mercedes Benz is very proprietary with their cars and certain functions in the car.
