It is telling you your pads are worn to the sensor. No one can guess what this will cost you. You will need new pads, likely new rotors and some fluid. If you are lucky your Calipers will be fine, after all the car is only 4 years old. While I am new to MBZ's judging from what I know having had several BMW's you should expect to pay about $400-$600 for the brakes per axle to have a good shop do the work.

I dont know much about beamers, but from what i've heard from owners....

bmw-usa requires new rotors when brake pads are worn out.

someone with credentials, please deny it, or affirm this.

Yes, BMW doesn't recommend turning rotors and neither does MB.

Normally, a set of rotors will allow pads to be changed twice. The rotors are composite rotors that wear with the pads. However, I have heard that some people have allow the shade-trees to turn their rotors. I would never allow my rotors to be turned (provided I know about it).

As for oil, well, I live in NC. I use Mobil 1 (15W40), year round. And my cars do well.
