Cranks but won't start

Earlier tonight @ about 10:00 pm I was driving about 75 mph in the second lane on the EB 580 in the Eastbay when I felt my car jerk and then lose power. I tried accelerating but it seemed that the car was off, lights were still on. I was able to pull off to the shoulder with the momentum the car already had (just enough to cross 3 lanes of traffic). I tried to start it but nothing. I even disconnected the battery and tired again without results. The engine does crank, but it seems that fuel does not reach it. Possible fuel pump failure? Finally the car was towed to a friends house nearby.

This is the first time that this has ever happened. It has always started up fine, at the first turn of the key. There were no signs of anything wrong on startup or while driving. The only thing that I noticed was a soft jerk right before losing acceleration. Everything seemed to be on and working, but while trying to accelerate, there was no reaction. No warning lights came on as if the engine had shut off.

So now I am asking for any suggestions or advice as to what could be wrong or any repairs that are suggested. Any one had simalar problems? Anything would be appreciated.

I'm going to assume by your screen name that you have a C280? If so, what year is it? Do you have the I6 ( M104 ) or the V6 ( M112 )?

Start with the basics...check for fuel, air, and spark. Do you have the CEL on?

1994 C280 2.8L. One thing I do notice is when I turn the key , I don't hear the fuel pump. This may be the problem. I checked the fuel pump relay fuse and it wasn't blown out.

What do you mean by CEL on?

Not knowing your car very well - is it possible the timing belt broke or the if it jumped several teeth and now the timing is so off it will not run?

That is my guess.

That all sounds good but first when you try to start does it try to crank at all, second if it does try to turn over did you check for voltage at the coil end. If you answered yes to both of those then i would proceed to the timing belt.
