Check Engine Light
I purchased a 1998 C230 approximately 4 months ago (42,000) miles and love the car. The cat seems to run hot (no check engine light)as when I turnthe caroff after going up a gentle grade to my house, it crenkles and crackles a lot. Our other cars (a '96, and '03) don't make a sound. I took it to the dealer and $100.00 later they said no problem. Two weeks later the check engine light came on (code P0170) and I took it back. This time they said air massflow sensor requires replacement. I had overheard the technician talking to the service manager and from the content and the tone of the conversation, I question if it requires replacement. The technician had said something about 'the tail end of the pattern on the screen was slightly out of spec..........'. Because they didn't have a sensor in stock, I didn't leave the car. Is there an easy way to test the sensor without specialized equipment? Also can I just buy a new sensor and put it in and not have to 're-calibrate' the car?

The car runs very well and gets very good milage - approximately 32 miles per gallon on secondary roads with little traffic. (Maybe too good of milage)

Any comments will be greatly welcomed!

My C230 98 has 120K Km and my "check engine light" has been on for approx 10K Km. They say it is the mass air flow sensor too but I am not changing it yet. They say it is a common problem... It sounds like "microsoft known issues". Anyway, if anybody has a cure (other than changing the MAFS every now and then), please post a reply.

My car seems to be running lean - the cat is getting hot and the milage is aroung 32MPG so rather then risk damaging the valves (and mortgaging my house to pay for it), I’m going to replace mine shortly. The cheapest that I could find was $320.00 (Bosch part) from 1-888-467-7278 (I forget the name of the company). They said it is easy to install and no further ‘calibrations’ are needed. This is much cheaper then MB service.

My C 230 from 1998 has 90K. Last year I changed AIR MASS FLOW SENSOR / $ 400,oo for new part /. It took me 1/2 hour to do it. Easy job. For the folks who don't know, PO17O mean you need to replace AIR
MASS FLOW SENSOR and I better like new part than to clean old one.
