Yes. Don't listen to anything else in this thread. I read this on another web site about a guy in Canada that had the same problem and its exactly what my problem turned out to be.
I had the dealer do it because I wanted him to do the diagnosis and be responsible if it was something else. The total cost was about $300.
The item replaced was a J cannister vent valve , 000-476-70-32 ($163) and a 24112 clamp ($0.75).
Labor was about $150.
Its tough to swallow that mercedes would make a failure mode that keeps you from driving your car. I know I could not put any gas in the car when it was really bad. I am glad I was not traveling cross country or in the middle of the night on a long trip and needed gas.
All I know is I never had this problem on any car I had in the past and have ever heard of this problem on any car. THis should solve your problem.
