C280 is a six cylinder car. How could the 8th cylinder misfire?

Not sure if this is relevant. My 95 c280 Check Engine light recently came onwith code 1700indicating the transmission was not receiving signals from the main computer. According to my mechanic, the transmission is not equipped with a computer that can receive signals from the main computer.Sounds like the problem encountered here to the extent the diagnostic system is indicating a problem that can not possibly occur. Perhaps there's a broader "phantom signal" issue going on.
