brake light fault

brake light fault
i have a c class 230 c200 cdi, and lately i started getting a warning on the dash diplay, saying : 3rd brake light.
i looked it up on the manual and it says that it means the third brake light is not working. but funnily enough, it is, all brake lights work. i have checked the fuses and they seem ok. the message on the dash isnt always there, sometimes it pops up after driving for a while, then it wont be there any more after i restart the car.
i made sure to check the brake lights when the message comes on, but they are always working.
any clues please?
