The tone does go away when the car is stopped or accellerating. As soon as the throttle is released, a loud steady tone can be heard. It sounds similar to the beeping when you leave the key in the ignition, except that it is constant. Turning on and off the AC blower does interrupt it for a second, but it comes right back.

I've started to have the same problem on my 99 c230K. all of a sudden, not sure what is going on, will get it looked at tomorrow but any advice from anyone would be great.

seems to be no rhyme or reason, the beep is not super loud but noticeable. when i turn on the fan for AC/Heater it instantly turns off.

Should have updated this.

murphyd - so the sound ended up going away on its own after about a week. Again, the sound would go away immediately (and stay gone) as soon as I turned on the fan/AC/heater. I was told by the shop I go to that it was some type of manifold in the vents that probably got loose and would "readjust" on its own. I was skeptical but it did go away about a week later and to this day have not heard it again.

For the record, this happened after I took it to the shop for something unrelated (getting new belts and transmission fluid). not sure if it was related somehow.
