'95 c280 Rear Headrest Problem

The rear headrests on my '95 c280 are not retracting they're both stuck in the upright position. I can hear a 'click' when I press the button on the dash, but nothing happens. Is there a manual release for the headreasts??

Thank you!

Don't know about a manual release, but I can tell you that if you search the forum you will find every possible solution for this problem. It has been addressed many many times. It should be a pretty easy fix for you, so don't worry.

vacuum problem! checd under the hood on the passenger side, under the cover near the fire wall for a vacuum line out of the block or a missing plug. OR get in the trunk under the rear deck and put a vacuum on the headrest line and push the dash button (with key on) The dash button (electric) acutuates the vacuum controls on the rear headrest.

I have a '95 C280 and had what sounds like the same problem you have. I did all the searches and requested a vacuum line diagram, but never got the info I needed. It wasn't until a trip to the dealership that I was able to fix it.

1) You can "manually" lower them to get them out of your way. From inside the trunk, you can lower the right one. You have to look through the oval holes at the top of the seat back and you'll see the black vacuum plunger that "sucks" the release down. You should be able to just push down on the black plastic connector on the top of it and it will release the headrest. The one on the left is more difficult to get to. I ended up pulling the back seat out (a total of 3 10mm bolts) and then was able to access it through the same oval holes, but on the front side of the seat.

2) The problem with mine was the grayish white vacuum line that runs across the back of the firewall and goes down to the manifold. This is the line that provides the vacuum for the headrests and mine had become disconnected. It flows across the firewall and curves down in front of the wall that separates the brake fluid reservoir from the rest of the engine compartment. This was discovered AFTER I spent countless hours checking the pump in the trunk, connections in the passenger compartment footwell, etc.

Good luck getting them to work.
