Default 85 C smokes

I'm looking at an 85 C class with 123K on the clock. The owner says that it smokes and knows nothing else about the car. I did a search and did not find much on this forum about smoking cars. It doesn't seem that the motor should be toast at 123K. Are there any common problems with these motors? Valve stem seals? Oil breather issues? As an auto enthusiast I don't mind taking the top end off and resovling some sort of issue...........I just don't want to buy a bad motor. I realize that I have not provided much info. I'm hoping to ferret out any common/known problems
Thanks for any help!
David

It WAS gas. Turns out it WAS also an 88 E. It would not start went I went to look at it this morning so I passed. My kid needs another car as his last one had a meeting with a tree. Thought it might be nice to put him in a Mercedes but it was not meant to be this particular day. My passions are old Chryslers and Porsches. I should probably just put him in a 928 as I know these inside out. I was surprised to see so many familiar looking parts under the hood of the E. Bob Bosch gets around.
Thanks for the reply.

Forcedinduction,
Was hoping to see a video of a boosted Mercedes when I clicked on your link.
