2006 C230 - Gas Mileage

One word: TERRIBLE! Average 12 miles/gallon city; 18 miles/gallon highway. Has anyone else experienced this? I bought it brand new in January '06. I've brought it in to service three times to have it checked out. Each time, they say that nothing's wrong with it. The attribute it to my driving short distances. Starting the car, turning it off. Can that be it? With the cost of gas prices, I'm screwed!!!

I'm getting 19.3mpg on a 2007 C230 with the 2.5L V6 engine loaner while driving very aggressively (pedal to the metal most of the time) with about 70% highway. My 2001 C240 gets about 21.5mpg on average with everyday driving and about 26mpg on long distance hwy travel.

RE: 2006 C230 - Gas Mileage

I remember this same issue raised by you late last year?

Again, I get just about 23.5 MPG in a mix of city and highway driving in the suburbs of Los Angeles. I drive it pretty light on the gas all the time trying to achieve this decent mileage.

My wife the leadfoot gets about 20 MPG when she drives it. She has a heavy right foot and does not watch the mileage while she drives because she is not putting the $3.75 fuel in the beast.

When I drive it very short distances, like 1-2 miles, like to the Gym and back in the morning, and it does not warm up, it will get about 17-18 MPG. It does warm itself up and get past this low mileage in just a few miles though.

Why don't you just beg the dealer to let you drive a loaner for one hour. Reset the mileage when you get in it, drive to for awhile like you typically do and finally see if it is you or your car.

Easy answer.

I am getting 28.7 with a 2006 loaner C-230 while my 2007 C-230 is in the shop AGAIN.
I was hoping to see 30 role up but I ran out of straight roads with no lights.
Areyou sure you are not driving in the S mode? (The sport mode)Look at your dash lights when the car is on, if you see the PRNDS instead of PRNDC then you are driving in the "gas gusseling mode", and you would be lucky to get 13 mpg. There is a small button near the tran shifter that will change that back to C for you.I have driven in the S mode, waste of good gas!!

Cherden,
I think you are innacurate about Sport mode. My mileage does not go down more than maybe 10% in sport mode. I can still get 20 MPG - unless you are drag racing it.

Maybe her MPG is correct and her odometer is innacurate?

RE: 2006 C230 - Gas Mileage

Hi Eric! Yes - it's me AGAIN! As you can imagine, I am beyond frustrated. Just this morning, I spoke to the dealer. He also asked if I was driving it in "S" mode vs. "C" mode. I told him that I honestly didn't even know that there were two different modes! I left my desk at work, walked to my car in the parking lot, and started it. Yep - it's in "C" mode. (Unfortunately). They said to bring it in and their head technician is going to take it for an extented drive (about 50 miles or so) to see what he gets. They'll be giving me a loaner - and that's a great idea - to see what mileage I get in that car. But that's IF I get the same exact car. Who knows? But I'll definitely keep all of you informed. The fact that I filled it up on Friday night, drove it about 4 miles. Drove it about 6 miles the next morning, and it registers DOWN 1/4 TANK! Unreal.

Thanks SO much everyone.
Val

I have a 2002 C320 and get 21 - 24 mpg on mix of city/highway driving, with up to 27.5 on longer highway trips. I am surprised that the C230's are not getting better mpg. I would attibute the lower mileage to factors such as aggressive driving andtypes/brands of tires, as well as the tire air pressure.

I have a really dumb reply... i am not meaning to insult your intelligence, but something to look at as well... the gas gauge is divided into 1/8's, not 1/4's... is it possible you are thinking that 1/4 tank is actually only an 1/8 of a tank? most vehicles only divide into 1/4's. i have an '04 C230K Sedan and constantly drive in either "S" or "Manual" modes and i average about 19-21 mpg. Goodluck figuring it out...let us know. :)

Didnt I post here earlier?Dont find my post now....hmmm
Anyway, Ibought a2002 C230 Coupe with 61K mi two weeks ago and it is giving me 32 to 33 mpg on freeway (65 mph @ 2500 RPM - gives you the best gas mileage in any car). I drive 50 miles every day, all on freeway, and I have been getting 29 - 33 consistently depending on traffic conditions and amount of braking. In city though the mileage is attrocious. Less than 20 mpg if I drive under 40 mph.
