help please diesel priming needed?

hi, I've got a c250d 1997 and just tried to fit a prefilter to the fuel line.
this didn't work out as now I can't get it started. I think there must be air in the fuel lines ( I hope that is the only problem )
Could someone please tell me the best way to get the car started. Is some kind of priming required?
I've spent an hour cranking it over on the starter motor. It just doesn't suck any diesel out of the tank and into the engine.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
thanks

I don't know if this will help you, but I ran out of diesel one time and after wasting precious time trying to start it because it couldn't be primed I asked my husband. I got lucky (he's a German mechanical engineer) He laughed at me and simply removed the air filter cover from the intake and sprayed WD-40 across them as I was trying to start the car. It kicked right off without a problem. It happened one other time and I used the WD and it worked. So I keep a can of WD in my trunk along with my tools. Like I said, I don't know if it will help, but you could give it a try.

in extreme cases you have to start your bleeding at the inlet to the injector pump and work your way through most or all your lines
