Default 1999 E55

I'm looking at buying a E55. One owner from new, Full Service history, about 85k miles and it straight as a die. But I have been told (by the owner, who's related) that the gearbox has/is seeping and there might be a problem with the steering rack.
Can anyone tell me if the E55 (1999 version) has issues with either gearboxes or steering racks?
I don't want to go down the route of replacing racks or gearboxes, as this would very costly I would imagine!
Can anybody advise?

Kind Regards

steering rack yes, gearbox no,, a steering rack for a non AMG E class that year was 2,400 dollars. That is a non AMG car but that is the price of one today at work. Gearboxes are pretty solid from my experience!!

What is the problem you have? theycan be noisy sometimes, they do leak from inside the rack into the Bellows on the steering rack and they also go dry on the inside and the control head of the rack must come out and be resealed with some o-rings too and new grease.
