1985 190D wood trim
 

I have a 1985 190D ( Diesel ) 5 speed. The wood around the shifter and on the dash is starting to crack and look bad. The car is in great condition with only 82K miles on it, but that wood trim just can't last forever. Where can I get some replacement wood. I havn't been able to find any dash kits for the car or anyting.....and the wood at the junkyard is in worse condition.

You going to have a tough time. There are probably many of these cars in salvage yards, but as you said the trim is probably bad. You could try and have it refinished. Someone I know who has a 86 190 made his own trim out of engine turned aluminium, if your handy you could do this. Try Bekkers, they specialize in Mercedes and BMW parts, not exactly sure of the web address, do a Goggle search. Also, try www.mercedesshop.com and click on Fast Lane. If you don't see the part listed email them, salutation to Phil, as they can secure recycled parts also. Good one by the way. Hope this helps!

Ebay is the besy place for new wood kits, but I've not been able to find any that match my car. There are so many different switch layouts.

Actually, how would you go about recoating the wood yourself? Obviously it wouldn't be genuine, but surely there's some sort of coating (vinyl of some sort?) you could overlay it with? I've taken all the wood bits out of my dash and plan to get them checked out tomorrow. Maybe an interior trimmer could offer some advice. The wood around the gearstick needs sanding back - someone tried to lift it and it seems to have flexed, causing ripples and creases.

Actually, I've almost removed my centre consol. It's quite interesting down in there :)

im not sure how good your woodworking skills are, however you could go to homedepot and buy new wood (nice stuff like boxwood or cherry) and then re create the pieces yourself. I think I will do that at somepoint with my car. I have seen others do it. I even saw a guy on make.com or hackaday.com take the old cover off his laptop, and allll th trim and body parts of it and replace them with new teak pieces he made himself. this is the coolest best bet for you.
