1978 450SL wood Trim - type of coating?

Wondering what type of coating is on the wood trim for this model 450SL ... I've heard its possibly urethane but also have checked out this article (http://interior.articles.mbz.org/wood) where the wood was laquered finished...( I know its different model )

Not sure how to proceed in restoring the wood trim in this car....

Take the car or the wood if it is off to and good refinishing shop and they can tell you how it is finished. Most "high end" cars use hand applied lacquer, as urethane can peel and bubble for excessive heat.

These cars were finished in celulose and were prone to water damage, these days we use 2 pack products. this is not something you can brush on,if you spray, you do need the breathing gear as its poison
There are plenty of firms out there these days that do a good job.

Television:

Thanks for the info, I just picked up a 1979 450SLC and some of the wood, mainly the console piece needs a refinish.

just sold a 78 450 slc. console trim was fine, but i would probably sand and lacquer what you've got as a start. if nothin else find a shop that restores things like that
