Won't shift into gear

Hello,

My ML 320 was working fine (or as fine as any of them ever work) Then the other day I started the car and it wouln't shift into gear. Any gear. The gear shift is locked up tight. I'm 50 miles to the nearest Mercedes Dealer! I have no idea what has happened. Does anybody have an idea? Starts fine, won't shift.I did make sure the steering wheel is straight and not locked.

Thanks! :)

Julie

Julie, you can always call MBUSA for free Roadside Assistance. Not sure if this kind of issue is covered, however, but it's a free call and maybe some peace of mind. 1-800-FOR-MERC(1-800-367-6372) Good Luck

RE: Won't shift into gear

Hi Julie,

I don't believe things are as bad as you might think.

The shift lever won't move into gear as a result of a safety feature. This requires your foot on the BRAKE.

I assume that you have done this therefore it is likely the BRAKE switch is malfunctioning. This is a common MB problem but I don't have much experience on ML (American built and part design).

There is (or should be) an EMERGENCY mechanical release for the shifter. This takes the form of a hole (usually partly hidden) adjacent to the shifter into which you have to put a ball pen or similar to release the mechanism. You need to read the User Manual for your vehicle since this usually has details of this procedure.

Note. The brake switch has two circuits so the brake lights appear to operate OK whilst the signal for the Transmission shift is not present.
