Investigating why the inside corner of a 1/2 worn Michelins was chamfred off down to the wire. I suspected Ball joints. Checking I found a Clunk, but not from the ball joint! The wheel bearing was loose. had over .06" end play. on the right side . .040 on the left. It took almost 1/2 turn on the adjustment nut to bring in into spec.
This cost me $600.00 in new tires. This was on my 2004 SL55 AMG at 90 K miles.

Check this before an alignment.
