SL Repair manual

I am in process of resurrecting a 94 SL. I just put the engine back together and it runs but poorly. It acts like the valve and/or ignition timing is late. I have been going crazy all summer trying to find a complete repair manual for the car including all engine specs, in particular right now valve timing spec, and all the vacuum and wiring diagrams. I have purchased three "complete" repair programs on DVD and found them to be something quite short of complete. The questions I have at this time are, does ANYONE out there in Mercedes land know where I can purchase a repair manual for an SL and short of that is there somewhere that I can find cam timing spec so I can check the valve timing with a degree wheel and dial indicator. Also I recall seeing somewhere that engine codes can be found without a scan tool. Where can I find the procedure and a code chart as it does trigger the check engine light after driving it for an hour or so. It is apparently not a hard code because when you shut it off the light resets and does not come on again until you drive it for a while. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

What engine does the vehicle have and what is the code? I do have the DM in acrobat form. What did you do to the engine? You can go to www.startechinfo.com and for around $18 access MB factory information.

Engine is the four cam 5 liter V8, with regards to the code I don't know as I don't know how to retrieve them. I started to replace the cam chain and upper guides and wound up pulling the engine and doing rings bearings etc. I did manage to find the base timing marks, 45 degrees on the harmonic damper and pin the sprockets through the front cam bearing caps. The engine does run smooth and normal driving around town it is fine although it sucks fuel on a par with my teenage beer drinking years, half a tank in about 75 miles. It is possible that the problem is engine controls because I also completely rebuilt the engine wiring looms. I was not willing to pay mercedes $800.00 for a wiring loom four feet long with 21 wires in it. $80 worth of color coded wire from RI Wire and a week of evenings with a soldering gun and it ran. I am about 90% sure that the wiring is correct but the insulation on the wires literally powdered and fell off when I touched it so can not be completely sure, hence my need for a detailed wiring diagram. I also do not know if the under hood vacuum is connected correctly as this was a project car when I bought it and it has been screwed with a lot, my need for vacuum diagrams. With regards to the startekinfo, do you use the program and is it complete to the degree of my needs? I am more than willing to pay the price but have been through this a lot with other programs and have found them to be almost as worthless as my ex wife and just don't want to be screwed again even for 18 bucks. No need to tell me about crazy germans, ain't nothing but a bunch of crazy huns in my family tree, been dealing with them for over 65 years. Thanks again for any help you can offer. P.S. don't EVER try to resurrect a dead Mercedes.
