Shifting Points
 
I have recently purchased a 91 190E. The previous (and only) owner told me that he had the "shift points" adjusted at one time. To me, the tranny shifts much too late and the engine revs quite high before it does finally shift. In fact, it will not shift from 1st to 2nd until it warms up a bit. Can this be adjusted back and is this an expensive procedure?

I don't see why would someone tinker with a MBZ trans anyways like that but the point is that he did. Well, sounds like he thought the trans shifted too early and wanted to be more like some half baked manual transmission. I think you should be able to change it back. On the other hand maybe the shift point swas changed to cover up a problem and that's trouble. Now I'ma go check my books and see if it's only electronic problem. If it is that's easy. Just change it back to factory settings.

Just don't remember off the top of my head.

Shifting late when the engine and trans are cold is normal. Especially first to second. It's an anti-smog scheme that M-B came up with. This late shifting lights off the cats sooner. It's usually around 3K RPM or so.

There's always some performance to be gained from (usually) raising the factory shift points. This is true of any manufacturer, including M-B. It may be that the shift points coordinated with a modification that was on the car and no longer is. This may throw off what were better shift points at one time.

shift point are adjusted through the boden cable i could tell you haw to adjust it but it would confuse you. like the person said it could have been adjusted to have problems hidden. as it is that trans already has a problem with b1 b2 reaction valves shifting to hard.
