Peeling coat from centre console
 

I have 2005 C200. Last weekend when I was cleaning it, what appear like a protective coating over the leather started to peel away. Has anyone had a similar issue?

What colour were the fragments they came away. The same colour as the concole? If so I suspect the coat of paint used to match the colour of the consolewith other interior parts is coming away. If clear then maybe you are correct and some form of protective film applied to prevent scuffing during manufacture has not been removed during vehicle prep.

Hard to tell what colour the fragment were, theylooked white when pealing. The leather beneath is certainly is darker, but not sufficiently different for me to think they were matching the colour.

.....matching the colour with other painted parts so substrate may be similiar but not exactly the same. Colour control is a big problem since most parts are supplied by different suppliers.
If the substrate is very different colour then i suggest that it is the paint peeling off. A common problem.
