new key fob problem please help

Hi, ordered a new key fob from dealer $200 plus, now another $100 to program plus appointment needed. Is this just the procedure in my manual, its an old flip style on a 98 sl 500 so no major computer key here. I want to try the manual procedure, push unlock X2 , within 30 secs put in ignition and turn to position 2 , but dont know if this can mess anything up. Ill never buy another benz without extra keys in the contract ! I know someone out here knows please help. Thanks

generally put key into driver door then lock and unlock door then put key in ignition and start car. the remote should work normally now.

what you have said is correct. I had to get a spare key for my SLK230 when I had it. but the bloke in the stores came out and did it for nothing. I guess in america they just want to get all your money.

I got an extra key for my 96SL500. Just set in the car and pressed the button twice pointing toward inside mirror (instructions in the owners manual). I don't know if yours is the same.

As others have stated, what your manual says is correct and it should work without any trouble. I have a 98 SL500 as well and my extra key came in 4 days ago. I picked it up at the dealer, walked out to my car, clicked it twice, put it in the ignition, turned the key to the accessory position within 30 secs.,pulled the key out, and tried my remote. Everything worked great.
