Hello everyone, I have a technical question. I am looking to purchase my first Mercedes. The one I found is a used 2005 CLK 320 Cabriolet. The car is beautiful, however, on the carfax, it states that the Valve cover gaskets have been replaced. Is this something that should alarm me? I know VERY little about mechanics of a vehicle. Does the replacement of valve cover gaskets mean that there was a catastophic failure of the engine that may have done damage that will surface down the road, or is this something that just happens, and should not be a red flag? Haha. No, replacing valve covers is nothing serious at all.

They're super easy to replace and the guy probably replaced it because it was leaking oil at the top or either other reasons: inspect timing chain, adjust valve clearance, gain access to spark plugs, etc.

 

Why is the speed decreasing? And why is it "damaged"? Did you wreck the car, so you're physically not able to drive it too fast?

Look at the model number - the higher the number, the faster the car. For example, the CLK 320. The CLK 500 is going to be faster. AMG is going to be even more quicker

 

Just because it says 500 or 350 or 600 or 320 on the trunk lid does not mean that's what engine is under the hood. I see people all the time changing the badges on the car..

 

You could have a clogged catalytic converter They can cause the car to misfire and run very poorly. possibly an air mass sensor?
