Mercedes classes and fading paint

As a new Mercedes owner I have a couple of questions (maybe this should be two threads):

1.) Can anyone tell me (or give me a link) a description of what the different "classes" are in the Mercedes models, such as the E class, the S class, the C class, etc? Just curious.

2.) I recently bought an '82 300SD. The paint is in great shape except for some slight fading on the hood. Can anyone recommend a polish or something that will restore the paint on the hood? The good news is that I park in a garage whre I work, so the car will only be exposed to minimal sunlight from now on (just when I'm out driving).

Thanks.

1. Someone just asked the exact same question a handful of days ago. Try doing a search. Someone responded with a link that explains the classes.

2. The only thing that will restore paint is paint. If the paint is not clear-coated (enamel?) and it's oxidized, you can usually "restore" it by removing the oxidation. Use any paste wax mixed with a little polish on a buffer pad. If it's clear-coated and dull, I'm afraid it needs new paint. You'll never get it looking right otherwise.

RE: Mercedes classes and fading paint

hello, when I get an older benz I like to use a product from 3M Called "Perfect-It III Extra cut Rubbing Compound." This product works great for restoring oxidized paint which is usually the problem.
Hope that helps
