Lifters 1994 E-420
Hello out there in the forum. I have a 5.0L 1994 E-420 MB. and a lifter on the right bank is starting to make a noise. Do these engines have solid lifters or do they have Hydraulic lifters??? Can anyone tell me. Also is it a real big job on the MB to change and or check for a noisy lifter?? Does anyone have a picture of the top end that they can e-mail to me on the removal and adjustment of the lifters, if there is any adjustment, or are there shims used for the MB lifters, any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all for your posts and any help. Any pictures of the valve train and the lifters would be a great help to me. Again thanks very much. Ben

First of all, as the tag says 4196cc. That would make it a 4.2 liter, not a 5.0
As for the lifter noise, the engine uses hydraulic lifters. No adjustment, and to replace them requires removing the cams. Most of the time when they get noisey it's because the end cap on one ( or more ) of the oil feeder tubes has come off. If that is the case hear, you need to replace the feeder tube. While you are in there you're best off replacing them all. You remove the valve covers and loosen one cam hold down cap at a time and replace the tubes held down by that one cap. Retighten and do the next. |

Thank you very much for straightning me out on this, I thought that it was a 5.0 L. I will pull the valve cover this weekend, I am going to MB dealer today and going to purchase a valve cover gasket and 8 oil tubes, just in case. Is there an easy way of checking the lifters to see if one is collapsing?? I really want to thank you very much for the great help. Ben

RE: Lifters 1994 E-420
Well pulled off valve cover, right bank and all of the oil tubes seem to be ok, all plugs are in at the ends, and all seem to be ok at the ottom where the O rings are, I guess the next step is going to try and replace and find the noisy lifter, any suggestions from anyone. Are there any special tools that I may need to do this job. Is it ok to replace just one lifter or do they all have to be replaced?? Now I also have another problem, my wife came home from work on friday and told me that the AC, is not blowing cold air as it did last year, and the Temp outside was 96 degrees. where is the suction line located. so that I may be able to put in some 134a freon in the system. I do not believe that there is a major leak here. Is the suction line the one with the large fitting on it or is the suction line the small fitting.

RE: Lifters 1994 E-420
Does anyone know an easy or the best way to change out 2 lifters on the 94- E-420 engine on the right bank. do you have to take off the whole timing chain or is there an easier way to do this job, can't afford to change out all the lifters at this time. is there a fast and easy way to do this job, I have just came back from the MB dealer and purchased 2 new lifters. Now not sure just how to proceed. Valve cover is off and know which lifter is noisy, all of the oil tubes are ok, also purchased all nwe O rings for the oil tubes after inspecting them?? Please help. Also are there special tools involved in replacing the lifter. Thanks out there on the forum. Big Ben 3
