I've Looked everywhere on this forum...

ok, i have searched and searched and would like to know the answer to this question.

why does the horn not work (2001 E320) if the key isn't in the ignition and in position 1 or 2?

i am new to this forum and the mercedes benz. yes, i read my owner's manual; it is not in there.

not a big deal, just wanted to know why.

thanks,

Wow, You're right.

I don't know the answer, but I do know a phD quality engineer at the factory who should.

Interestingly enough, my wife and I were stranded at the gas station last night in her Honda; The battery didn't have enough kick to start the car because she had left accesories running all night. I know the accesories in my mercedes shut off when the key is removed, so I haven't had this problem. But I can think of times when it would be necessary to use the horn without the key...

horn is among the electrical consumer that's being cut-off whenever the key is not in the ignition.

it's one of the safety item on which might cause problem if left un-attended. (possibility of activation, short circuit if somebody bump your car on acident).

the horn for your alarm system is separate unit and that one is active. it got it's own battery which wont affect the car's power supply if it gets faulty.
