Help with 300SD

I just bought a 1982 300SD. During the long drive home I noticed the engine seems to rev very high during cruise. The tach is intermittent, but when it worked once I noted the engine was at 2500 RPM at 70 MPH. Considering it is a TD with a 4300 RPM redline this seems high to me. The car feels very comfortable at 55 - 60, but feels like it is being pushed at 65+. If you drop it to "L" it shifts once from 1st to 2nd, then bump it to "S" and it shifts again to 3rd, then bump it to "D" and it shifts once more to 4th and stays there no matter how fast you drive. Downhill at 70 and off the gas it stays at 2500 rpm. Does this transmission have a "lockup" for cruise????? If so I think mine is not locking. Does anyone know what the problem could be???

Also, the seats in this are junk!!! The non-adjustable seats in my 89 toyota pickup were many times more comfortable than these no matter how they are adjusted. The springs are worn out and provide support in all the wrong places. Has anyone found a good modern replacement that will fit. Leather seats out of modern wrecked cars are cheaper than recovering the old junk seats. I saw some on ebay out of a jag that looked nice.

Thanks

Mike
