when turning from lock to lock when stationery .i never do it just explaining could do it with one finger but now i kneed one sometimes two hands when doing a3 point turn do i have variable stearing has it stuck on the higher speed setting just had m o t ball joints ok fluid levels ok renewd self leveling suspension at 125000 miles nowon 145000 just replaced speedo and had mileagecorrected drives perfect stearing great except on very slow manouvering...........thanks in antisipation

All depends on how heavy! Some assistance or no assistance?

Sounds more likely that the PAS pump (pressure relif valve?) is no longer working correctly bearing in mind 145000 mile..

I note your point about the speedo. I assume they just changed the head unit and that there wasn't a signal fault from the speed sensor. Speedo now OK?

If they corrected the sppedo mileage this necessitates resetting a number of parameters in the ECU. Not sure if there are alternative speed / steering weight settings that may have been changed / corrupted.

thanks stew old speedo worked ok changed because of missing pixels on clock and temp gauge .will keep you informed is the pressure relief valve a pump strip down

you can try looking at the plug for the speed sensitive steering on the steering rack. its a plug on the rack that sometimes the shop will unplug to gain access to something like motor mounts.

Yep but not sure if pump is intended to be dismantled or "sealed for life" style.

Hi there. I am having the same problem with my 99 E320 4Matic. Took it to a local MB shop and they say I need a new steering rack for mucho $$$. If it is something as simple as plugging in a connector, I will consider the day saved!
Where is this connector located?

Hi,

First step...PAS Oil level correct?
Next...Oil leak. Need to take a look around under the rack, pump and cooler.

Also...
Is problem at all speeds including stationary in which case unlikely the speed sensor.

Do you get assist when stationary?

Why does the gasrage assume it is the rack rather than the pump? Could be either.
