E Class Saloon Boot Release Mechenism
Hi,
I fitted a tow bar today to an E Class Saloon 1998 model, but the boot is failing to open. It seems to be half shut, not fully closed. The customer is unable to insert the key into the barrel as he said it had something jammed inside and hasn't been able to use the key in the past. Surely though the reason there is a barrel lock that a key can be inserted into is if the vehicle electrics are down you can gain access to the boot area by using the manual key.
When pressing the key fob for the boot release nothing is happening, yet the batteries are ok on the fob as the doors and petrol cap are locking and unlocking by the central locking. We checked all the fuses on the car and they are ok.
The boot release button on the central console by the gear stick is constantly illuminated and when lifted to simulate opening the boot it still will not release the boot.
We removed the rear seats and tried to locate the catch release from inside by rigging up a screwdriver on a pole but obviously access was very limited with the metal sheeting behind the seats.
Does anyone know how we could release the mechanism to gain access to the boot?
What concerns me is that the barrel from the outside moves. It pushes into the boot lid to one side by about 3cm and when we lift the boot lid up and down it moves separately.
Your comments would be greatly appreciated.

For people who have read this we managed to get the boot lid open.
Warning....do not close boot lid on saloon model without the boot trim intact.
There is a 3 or 4cm button/contact that sticks out of the boot lid and when the lid is closed this button pushes in tells the car the boot is shut. If the trim is not in the vehicle the when the lid is closed the button will not press in.
The manual key was no good as the lock had seized.
We then had to remove the rear seats and rig up a pole with zip ties holding a flat head screwdriver in place. We could then reach the button which is 6 to 7 inches to the right of the locking mechanism and lift up while pressing the remote to open the boot.
So remember DO NOT shut an E class saloon 1995-2002 boot lid with the boot trim out.
P.S. I drive Audi.
