Cracked catalytic converter, '97 E420
Dealer diagnosed check engine light (codes PO 133 and PO 140) as being caused by cracked catalytic converter on right side, allowing air to enter exhaust and influence oxygen sensor readings. Quote for the part alone was $1540 plus tax. Don't know how much labor would be. If anyone has some suggestions about this, would appreciate if you passed them along.
My first question: is it possible that the catalytic converter could be repaired? If so, can a muffler shop do it, or do I need to find a special shop? (Service advisor at the dealer said they would not attempt to repair it.)
Second: if it can't be repaired, are there cheaper after-market catalytic converters that somebody can recommend? Likewise, if there are any that I should definitely stay away from, would like to know that, too.
Many thanks in advance for your help.

there are lots of mercedes catalytic converter choices that you can choose from.. you can try searching at ebay - lots of good finds at reasonably price; parts stores or even at junk yards.. good luck
