Converting to manual transmission

Converting to manual transmission
I have a 1983 240D automatic. I'm getting estimates of $2500 to $3500 to rebuild the transmission. Is that reasonable? Also... anyone have a guess on how much it might cost to convert to a manual instead? THANKS!

Hello and welcome to the forum - that seems a bit high for a rebuild as I've paid quite a bit less for much newer cars, but I could be wrong and other members should confirm. If you get a manual transmission, are you going to be doing the swap yourself?

I believe the age of the car is precisely the reason for the price of the rebuild... parts are expensive for the older cars.... that is at least the reason that all of the mechanics keep giving me.
No... I am not a wrench turner. I would be paying a shop.

the reason I believe it needs to be rebuilt is that it is hesitating to go into gear from a stopped position, it shifts up and down sharply and quickly while decelerating, and it needs the accelerated mashed (engine revved) before it will engage in gear at all.
I've received essentially the same quote from 5 locations. All blame the high price on the high price of parts.
Having trouble seeing my way past this one... any suggestions?
