I found out that when buying a car manufactured before 1980, you can't get a Carfax (or similar) report on the basis of the car's V.I.N. Is there another source for this source of information or is the buyer of an old car simply unable to find out any history on such a car? Help!

James, try contacting the DMV, they can tell you some history on title, smog and accident damage.
