brake and turn lights suddenly stopped working?

A friend crashed/crunched the RR quarter panel slightly and the RR door slightly. Middle of the door to middle of the panel - no where near the rear lights. Insurance company totaled the vehicle, he kept it, and I later bought it. Had been sitting for several years but started up in about seven minutes. Ran well for about a week but now all the turn signals and the brake lights just stopped working.

My first thought would be to look for a 'common denominator'.

My question is: what do you all suggest that that might be? <g>
