Brake Problem on 230 SLK
Hi,
No I see this differently.
Firstly an OBD scanner will not pick up the codes you require. You will need to visit your dealer.
I too have experienced the sort of "slide" you refer to after having the wheels off.
I take it that it is a front wheel (from the size). I assume that the tyre size is the same as the other wheel on the opposite side of the car. The size appears correct for the front but I haven't double checked.
Have you "normalised" the steering sensor. Full lock to full lock (a couple of times for good measure) with the engine running.
If this doesn't clear it then you need to get the codes.

Thnx Stuart. did the "normalize" and no change. headed to the stealer. im just thinking "there has to be something that i can look at before i go. change the tires around, lift the car up? maybe clean any wheel sensors with ? how does the flat tire scenario effect the bas/asr control. ive seen that a few people have mentioned that when you get a flat ro change tires? thanks. big appreciation for your help and input.
Hi,
You say the bas/asr light came on. What do you refer to as the bas/asr light?
The malfunction warning lights OR the big Yellow Triangle which warns the system is "in operation". I suspect you mean the former in which case this doesn't move us forward.
I'm struggling to link the fact that the system went down when the wheel was removed fitted. You didn't state which wheel. I suddested a front. Could the lead to the wheel sensor have been damaged when the wheel was changed? or even damaged itself due to the suspension dropping to full travel?
The sensors are easily changed but unless you have the code you may just be creating expense for yourself.
If you have time on your hands you could remove the sensor....straightforward procedure.....and ensure the tip is not contaminated with excess brake dust especially if you are using non standard "high metal content " brake pads. Low confidence but a possibility.

Thanx again stuart. your help is gretly appreciated. im taking a look at the sensors this weekend. as for which tire it was that went flat....it was the right pass rear tire which incidentally was the one that i felt skid/slide as i turned the corner that one morning when the light came on. (its not the triangle one but the warning light that remains on.) thanks again!!!
REAR!
So you have 205/55/16 on ALL wheels. Have you checked (especially the "55" bit). Most 230 have wider tyres on the rear than the front.
Anyway if they are the same tyres than before the problem all should be OK anyway.
Since my experience isn't specifically on MB I wonder whether the rear sensors are located at the hubs or the differential.
Something makes me think they may be inboard in which case "damage" associated with the tyre change is unlikely, as is brake dust contamination.
Sorry but I don't have my reference material at hand.
Anyway if you want to avoid a trip to the shop check them ALL out and wipe clean the tip etc. A good maintenance job anyway even if there isn't currently a problem with them. Check the wiring from the sensor very carefully for damage/cracks.

Great place to start. thanks for the tip. things i wouldnt have thought of. im definitely going to take care of it this weekend. sure enough, the tires were all the same size prior to the flat. reading about different stories here how one gets a flat or changes a tire, then subsequently has problems with the bas or asr switch/light makes me think how one has to do with the other. cant wait for the repair manual to come out. thanx again sutart. happy holidays...
