RE: Bosch spark plugs ok?

ORIGINAL: Lugnut

Platinum plugs provide a less powerful spark at the same gap than copper. That's why Bosch doesn't make such a ludicrous claim as the platinum increases horsepower.

If you use platinum, make sure they are the kind without platinum buttons. They'll fall off into the combustion chamber long before 100K miles.

None of you guys are stressing the use of anti-seize. With just about every M-B using aluminum head(s), you need anti-seize if you ever plan to remove spark plugs after 100K miles without removing part of the head(s) along with the plugs.

Most of you guys are putting way too much importance on spark plug brands. You sound silly as ****.

Actually, Lugnut, the Bosch 4's providing more horsepower isn't ludicrous. One of the independent tests I saw was on Horsepower TV. They took a brand new Vette and put it on a dyno and recorded the horsepower at the rear wheels. They then changed plugs to the Bosch 4's and reran it (this was the only change made). The horsepower increased, as I recall, about 4 or 5. I have also read similar test results in a least one Vette magizine.
As for the anti-seize, you are right on. This is especially important with aluminium heads. Whether or not a better plug is made, I don't know. It's just hard to argue with these test results.
This is my last post on this subject as everyone has their own opinions and are not easily swayed.

Actually, it's easy to argue with those tests results, but I won't. I don't see much to gain from arguing over sparks plugs. We should probably being arguing about iridium versus platinum anyway.

In addition, which race teams uses platinum plugs? Seems they'd be running to the parts store to get some if they increased horsepower.

RE: Bosch spark plugs OK?

Today is Sunday so I spent two hours replacing my plugs. They say F8DPP33 on the box (not Bosch 4, sorry). The bitch is getting the boots off the plugs. I removed the coils and wires to gain access. AND YES I ALWAYS use anti seize on Aluminum head applications. After I reassembled the engine, I cleaned the compartment with a strong simple green solution so now it looks new in there. I just drove the car about 15 miles, long enough to get it to temperature and get some stop and go city driving.

Nice and crisp acceleration and VERY smooth idle, in Drive and AC on, or in Park. I won't wait Miles again, although all the old plugs matched color had look serviceable. I will let you know if my mileage changes.

Hey Lugnut, maybe MB uses two platinum plugs per cylinder to properly control combustion temperature( since they run cooler by design). Using copper plugs may ruin your motor.

I am singing the same tune as Lug this time...copper, platinum, iridium, yadi yada....makes no significant performance difference.

The only thing is Platinum lasts longer than copper plugs. I believe...OEM plugs are Bosch Platinums? That way they can do 100K plug-change interval.

The whole Mercedes Benz car is overwhelmed with Bosch parts. THE CAR PRACTICALLY IS BOSCH. So I don't understand why the question was raised in the first place whether to use Bosch plugs! Go ahead and put NiponDenso or NGK if you want...there ought to be no practical difference.

If you smear some dielectric grease on the inside of the boots, they won't get baked on like yours were. They'll just slip right off next time. It's worth it to go back and put some on. Just put some on your little finger, jam it in the boot and smear it around. [Insert dirty joke here.] Use a Q-Tip if you have fat fingers.

I broke four or five boots/wires @ $65 each when I changed my plugs. Those things suck.

Copper plugs ruin a motor? No way, unless the platinums do too. You can get hotter or colder plugs. If you used two copper plugs and by chance the operating temps rose (and it won't rise to dangerous levels), you just put cooler plugs in. Any parts store would sell you the proper temp copper plugs, though.

The platinum plugs are a marketing scheme. 100K-mile plugs sound appealing. I'm not saying platinums are necessarily bad, BTW (unless they're the button type). I'm saying they're over-priced and in most cases won't last 100K miles and that copper plugs perform better at up to about 1/20th of the cost.

Lets see $65 X 12 = $780. 00. That would have made me faint! I will grease 'um. The heat range issue is more important in older vehicals and all my air cooled engines. I am not too worried about how long the plugs last, I will will pull a couple this summer and check there condition.

BikerDrew,
Do you mean it says F8DPP332 on the box? If so how much did you get them for and from where?

Regarding the anti-seize, do I apply it around the thread or the washer or both? Liberally or conservatively? Do local auto stores sell it?

Apply it only on the threads... and carefully and conservatively. Just enough to coat the threads lightly. Don't get any on the electrodes, though it's okay on the compression washer. The stuff gets everywhere, like it has a mind of its own. Have some rags or paper towels handy and wash your hands immediately when you're done or before you take a break. You'll be slimed with this stuff from your face to inside your underwear. Seriously.

You can buy anti-seize at any auto parts store. It's easy to find and comes in either small tubes to plastic jars about the size of a mustard jar with a brush attached to the lid. Larger commercial tubs are available but you'll never need that much. A small tube should be sufficient to do all of your plugs.

RE: Bosch spark plugs OK?

The part number is on the individual plug box. I believe I got them at GET COOL PARTS, check their prices Listed as OEM replacement @ $10.67ea..

As to Anti seize, I get the crayon stick variety-"Thread Magic". The tube says it is made by AGS Company, Muskegon , MI USA. I found it at a local hardware store. The liquid stuff is too hard to use cleanly.

About $1.29 a stick, which is about five inches long. I used it on 12 plugs and burned up only a half inch. I've been using it on my motorcycles.

I just checked GET COOL PARTS and they have FULL ignition wire sets for about $106. That's a bit better!
