Default Alarm goes off when battery changed

I'm feeling really dumb here. I've searched for this but didn't come up with anything so I guess I'm the only one around with this simpletons' problem.

You see whenever I remove and replace the battery from my older model (1997) Mercedes E320, the factory installed alarm goes off. Then the car locks up and wont start.
What am I doing wrong?
Is there a secret or series of steps I should be taking when I remove and then replace the battery?

Thanks from a Damsel-in-Distress.[&o]

When changing a battery hook up a charger to THE LEADS before removing the battery. Place new battery in its place hook up the cables then remove the charger. You will never lose power to the car and avoid any of the usual problems, ie radio code, alarm....etc.

Michael

P.S. You joined on April fools day.....But I ain't foolin....the charger idea works great!

I hadn't noticed it was April Fools' Day.[>:]

Have you tried using your remote to open close and open the door locks after you changed the battery and the doors get locked with the alarm going off?
Shan.
