92 SL500 Transmission just quit? Sorta
Hello,
I just bought a 92 SL500 at the Palm Springs auction. Very nice car with 116,000 Miles. Appears to be well maintained and cared for. Any Way i drove it about 30 miles all seamed fine. Then accelerating from a stop light the car made a twang sound and lost all forward or rear ward motion. The trans seams to work only i can hear something in the rear that sounds stripped. The Drive shaft looks fine. The car will roll if in Park as well.
Any ideas what happened and what will be needed to fix it?
Thanks
Dan

If driveshaft turns while transmission is in gear, symptoms lean toward a rear differential internal failure or a axle breakage. Suggest having car towed to a repair shop for further diagnosis.
Hi, and thanks for the input.
The rear end is fine, It spins the driveshaft right through to the yolk in the trans. Even in park. Not good eh!
I will pull the trans out Sunday and take to the local trans shop for repairs.
Must be a freak break as no one seems to know what failed.
Thanks
Dan

agree. get the trans rebuilt. I have found when I had to rebuild my trans, it really is just the best solution to havethe trans shop reomove, rebuild, replace the trans. Keep away from AAMCO (they hurt my first trans rebuild) and other chain stores, go with a local you have talked to and has many cars/trucks parked outside, which means, they are really good. Keep us informed.
