300E Iginition cylinder replacement

Hello all,

Lazlo here with a quandry.

Has anyone experienced the joy of replacing a ignition cylinder?

The auto is a 1989 300E with kilometers on the speedometer. From Canada I presume.

If so, would you be so kind as to fill me in on the many ways I could screw this up and perhaps give me a tip or two as to how it should be done?

Purchasing the cylinder from your sponsor parts supplier, German Auto Parts, as a good forum user should.

Thanks in advance of your efforts.

RE: 300E Iginition cylinder replacement

Okay, I've followed this link (and a different one with scans from the manual, thanks!) and I still have a question about this procedure...

I have a '93 300E and (obviously) I'm trying to replace the ignition tumbler. I'm using an unpainted coat hanger as the 2 pin wire and the replacement tumbler has the spring only on the top part. While it's entirely possible that I'm not depressing the spring enough, I'm not sure how the black cover (36b from the diagrams) will come off. It looks like it is notched so that it won't turn (clockwise or anti-cw)unless it's pulled out maybe a quarter of an inch. Will it just come straight off (with or without the tumbler) and I need to apply more elbow-grease? Or does it need to rotate?

Thanks for all of the help (I've already used posts from the forum to replace the radio and fix some trim).

Happy holidays!
Jon
