they dont tell you because they are not really supposed to. when the dealer does the service, there are items that are checked and replaced with certain services and they can be kept track of correctly so they can be sure the car was properly maintained. if you keep reseting the counter yourself than the normal recommended items for that service are not being done as recommended. some dealers will not just reset a service reminder for you. people go to pepboys to get a service done then come to us to reset the counter. so its possible the dealer might charge you to reset the counter. it seems petty that they wont tell you but its really about proper maintenance.
