I have oil in my coolant. The MB dealer suggests a head gasket is the problem. Is this a common problem with the 2.6 engine? Is this a symptom of a head gasket? I am considering fixing it despite the cost, as it has only 93k miles and plenty of life left in her. THanks.

 

When I started working at the dealer in 1995, I saw the techs doing alot of headgskets on 103 motors for this problem. (external oil leaks also). I remember one that was let go for so long that ALL the coolant hoses HAD to be replaced due to swelling! (Along with the expansion tank and radiator.) $$$!
The old German that I was working next to showed me that he put a shellac sealer around the areas of the oil passages on the headgasket to prevent comebacks. Unlike many other Techs (who have argued that since the headgasket has been updated there is no need to do that), I've NEVER had a comeback for a leaking headgasket! (104 motors too!)
It can be a real pain to get all the oil/coolant mixture out of the system though. I'd strongly recommend a thorough flushing of system after you're done.
Also recommend replacement of bypass hose while cyl. head is off.
