RE: 1986 190E w/ 160,000 mi--- how far can drive?
My cell phone provider is Sprint. They sell me a roadside assistance service for $4.00 USD per month. The benefit is for me so it doesn't matter who's car I'm in if I call. My car, your car, their car, old car, new car, any car.
I can call four times each year. It provides for everything you'd expect from roadside assistance. They'll change a flat tire for you, provided that you have a spare tire. They'll bring you gas if you run out or a locksmith if you lock yourself out. They'll jumpstart your car if the battery is dead. OR, TOW YOUR CAR IF IT BREAKS DOWN. There may be additional charges depending on what is provided, like the cost of gas or the tow. The point is you won't be stranded wondering what to do.
I wish I could say I own part of Sprint, but I don't. Anyway, would something like that make you feel more comfortable? It won't break your bank, I don't think. You could enjoy your road trip instead of worrying about whether your car will make it. If Sprint offers this then I'm sure the other cell providers do as well.
My point is don't forget the parachute, er, I mean the cell phone.
