Default 1984 300SD Glow Plug Relay test?

Hi all,
Glow plug light doesn't come on, and starting is difficult.

I tested all glow plugs with a multimeter by putting the positive probe on the threaded tip of each glow plug and the negative to the engine block near the plug. I get between .4 and .9 ohms on each.

I tested the power to the relay and get 12V on one of the four wires (it is black with a red stripe) that goes to the relay when the ignition is turned to the glowplug point. 0 volts on this when the ignition is off.

Also, I checked voltage to the glow plugs when the ignition is on. 0 Volts at each.

The strip fuse looks fine at the relay, and I get 12V at each end of the fuse when the ignition is off. So I am assuming that current can go through the fuse.

Does this sound like the glow plug relay is dead?

How might I check the relay?
Have I effectively eliminated the posibility of the glow plugs being shot?

Thanks for any help.

I know this reply is probably way to late...
Yes it does sound like the relay, yoru diagnosis seems pretty good.

Another possibility is those Mercedes connector plugs (not to be confused with glow plugs) - sometimes they get loose, I've solved problems just by taking the back off the female side of theconnectors and then squeezing the wire cylinders a little bit to make them tighter on the peg - from memory the cylinders come right out still soldered to their wire, and then you just place them back in and clip the cover back on.
In yoru case it would be the smaller plug that feeds 12 volts to the relay - otherwise *all* of the glow plugs would not show zero volts, just one or 2. Might be worth a try before buying the relay - but as I said, it's probably too late now anyway....

On second thought,I don't think it isa loose connectorsince I don't think power would reach the fuse if the connection was loose.

I'm assuming that power goes to the fuse before it is fed to the relay, which would point to a faulty relay.
