Default 1978 240-D No Reverse

I have a 1978 240-D with automatic transmission, 175,000 miles. The reverse has been weak for some time; however, it has completely gone out now. I have been told it could be the B2 piston.

Does that sound right? Any thoughts as to what may actually be a better source of the problem. Is this a hard fix? I hate to spend $1200 for a rebuilt transmission. I didn't pay that much for the car !

All thoughts and input is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

it could be a burnt reverse clutch. this usually happens because of a dirty or clogged filter. when was the last time you changed your tranny fluid and filter?
