Well I called Aamco & they said if the 190e has a trans problem do not buy it.
The guy selling it told me Aamco told him $700 to replace the modulator valve.
I was planning to do it myself.
Does it sound like I should pass on this car?

 

There's got to be more to the story here. The modulator changeout is a less than an hour's labor for a $60 part. Somethings missing in the explanation from somebody. If the car is driveable, get it to a shop/tech that knows MB's, whcih in my mind doesn't necessarily include AAMCO.

You know what's interesting is that probably 95% of the general public has never heard of a modular valve. Having said that, aamco is free to create wild prices considering they know little about the part costing less and it being an easy fix.

How many miles are on the 190e and which model is it? 2.3L 8v? Personally I would get a few quotes from mb techs then start from there.

Now my husband is scared for me to buy the car,it is $800.
I have a 1989 190e in the yard that I bought for $1,200 it ran like a dream for 1 week & the bam with no warning huge amount of white smoke & engine was gone!
Two holes in the block!
