Default 190E Auxiliary belt tension

I have a 1987 190E 2 litre and asked a local guy who 'knows all about Mercedes' to fit a new auxiliary belt. He took the car away and has now phoned saying he has fitted the belt but is unable to obtain enough tension. My suspiscion is that he has undone the pulley nut too much and unhitched the tension spring anchorage or else loosened the tension adjuster so much that it has come outth out from it's thread. Do either of these seem feasible? and can anyone suggest how to recover from this mini disaster. Problem compounded by the cats that the car is automatic (no towing) and it is at hios gfarage 30 miles away!
Thanks in anticipation and Happy New Year to all Merc owners.

this is true.

removing the whole tensioner assembly and doing close inspection will reveal it.
