~ IGNITION KEY Can't Turn :: '91 Merc 190E

I own a 1991 Mercedes 190E 2.3 (4 cylinders) here in Canada. About 6 months ago when we tried turning the ignition the key would not turn. Naturally we tried jiggling the steering wheel but still the key would not turn. The tow truck guy wanted to check things out and he too couldnt get the key to turn. Eventually we had to take it into the mechanic who charges us $400 to replace the entire lock / rack? and such and gave us a NEW key to start the car. Now with 2 keys just to use the car (one to open the door, the other to start) we were fine. We also obtained a second key to start the car as a backup.

Today we are experiencing the same problem; we can't turn the ignition. Both keys don't work. Could there be some "safety" switch tripped within the vehicle due to some low fluid or faulty part which could be causing this problem? What can i do to resolve this issue?

For the record the front wheels are pointing straight / forward.

FYI ~ FAULTY PARTS: the passenger side rear wheel has been making some awful noises. I believe the break caliper has dislodged and is rubbing up against the rotor (we had this issue about 6 months ago but had it repaired with a used caliper). And the muffler is in bad shape in need of replacement (i've patched it before this past winter).

Thanks

hi I came across the same problem today, but mine is A190, how did you solve the problem at the end? is it possible to get someone unlock the key?

When I had thtis problem on my 1988 190e received advice on this site to
keep trying to turn key and after number of minutes trying the key turned. Then told never turn it off until key cylinder it pulled out and replaced. In my case the locksmith recut the key and still working. Interestingly after a while the blower motor would not turn on and accidently back off the key a tiny bit after car started and the blower motor comes on. Hoping it continues to work.

Motor issue can't get resolved by locksmith but yes locksmith can cut the key for you that can work with the ignition.
